A lone loggerhead sea turtle went out to sea following a nest inventory at North Litchfield, Thursday, Sept. 9, conducted by volunteers of South Carolina United Turtle Enthusiasts (SCUTE). Volunteer Bill Raley did the digging in the nest for the inventory, and his wife, Kathy Raley, and South Carolina United Turtle Enthusiast Co-Founder Jeff McClary did an inventory on a loggerhead turtle nest at North Litchfield. Preliminary figures indicate a 93 per cent hatchling success rate, as 80 hatchlings left a relocated nest of 87 eggs several nights before and one hatchling was freed on excavation during the inventory. Two out-of-state physicians, sons of Delores Anschel, of Murrells Inlet, stood either side of her as they visited the North Litchfield beach for the inventory. Dr. Alan S. Anschel is a specialist in spinal cord injuries and is on the staff Rehab Institute of Chicago. In addition, he is on the staff of Northwestern University Medical School, and Dr. David J. Anschel is a neurologist with the Comprehensive Epilepsy Center of Long Island at St. Charles Hospital in Port Jefferson NY.
